Wooden Chair by Marc Newson, 1988

  • More Info - This low lounge chair is a very sculptural piece of furniture, like many of Newson’s chairs. A metal version has also been made. It is shown at the MoMA in New York.

  1. One of my favorite chairs to look at, but I'm guessing not as good to sit on- seems you'd be constantly sliding to one side or the other :(

    Do you agree? The seat of the chair is shaped like a barrel - except with a teardrop shaped rather than a circular cross section. The chair back curves so that your spine would settle toward the center, but the seat arches so that your bum would slide off center. Pretty, but not practical.

  2. Yes, it probably isn't the most practical or comfortable chairs but Newson's usually aren't. His chairs are often made with aesthetics in mind more than function. However I love how some chairs are more like sculptures or pieces of modern art and are better just to be looked at rather than sat on.
